Did he make you a new, programmed, master key? Or did he just cut you a new key from a non-chipped blank (making it a valet key)? If you don't have a new key properly programmed as the master key, the anti-theft module will shut the car off after a predetermined amount of time.

The new key will need to be programmed in order to start the car. You'll need to find a VW technician that have the "VW TACHO" computer to program the key... if you are in the DC metro area I know a good guy and can referral his mobile service to you, let me know.
