1971 Chevy Impala 400 small block stalls
1971 Chevy Impala Convertible, 400 small block. Car will stumble briefly then
stall completely at highway speeds due to no fuel getting to carb. Gas tank
builds up vacuum. Can prevent by leaving gas cap loose but with cap behind
rear license place this is not a good fix.
The gas tank vent is plugged up.
Check your EVAP system vacuum lines and the charcoal canister. Make sure everything is hooked up correctly and none of the lines are clogged. On these early systems there's a filter on the bottom of the charcoal canister that should be replaced every year or 12,000 miles whichever comes first. The vacuum hose connections will be clearly identified on the top of the charcoal canister. If I remember correctly it's CARB, and TANK. Here's a picture of the charcoal canister filter too. Hope that helps! Jim
Also make sure you have the correct kind of gas cap on it. Rockauto lists a vented cap for your Impala. Hope that helps! Jim
