make sure the distributor is turning, sounds like a distributor issue.

Stupid question but.... Are you getting power to the coil?

check and make sure your coil is getting power, may be your ignition switch or relay. Make sure everything is grounded correctly if this was an engine swap.

maybe your ignition control module has taken a crap. had that one happen to me on my s10 rebuild.

i would check the rotor and see if its turning or not, if not the gear on the bottom that turns with the crankshaft is broken or loose, but theres a good possibility the distributor is failing, we had a 84 that had that problem and the distirbutor wasn't to expensive to replace.

I second the ICM - it is a flat 2" chip under the cap, you can't miss it. They're about $25. I always used to carry a spare after spending a whole weekend trying to figure out why my car wouldn't start!!

if im not mistaking there should be a most likely orange wire from the distributor that loops back into the harness and makes its way to the altenator. can be a botch to find but my brothers 84 gmc had that issue and it took a week of messin around with it to find.
