computer says I need an oil change soon

Asked by GuruFNRMX Apr 27, 2020 at 04:01 PM about the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Is there a computer message that tells me the oil is low?  Due to very little usage,  I did not need to change my oil this often on previous cars.  I don't get a percentage of oil life left.  Last June, I took car to have oil changed because computer said it was time.  Hardly drove the car, except for short trips to grocery, etc. and was planning to have it changed in August when car is to be inspected at dealership.

The computer calculates when an oil change is needed by the mileage you drive, engine temperature, the kind of driving you do based on engine RPMs, and the time the engine is running. If you don't drive the vehicle much it can take a very long time before the oil change message comes on. It's best to have the oil changed at least once a year whether the oil change message comes on or not. Just be sure they reset the oil life system when they do the oil change. The system is not foolproof though. If you drive through an unusual situation, like a dust storm, for example, the oil should be changed soon after. My 2000 Grand Prix has an oil change light that's never come on in the 7 years I've owned the car. I only drive it about 500 miles per year. That's why. So I change the oil once a year. Hope that helps! Jim

Oh and yes, if your oil gets to be about one quart low a message will come on to let you know. I would still check the dipstick periodically though. Hope that helps! Jim
