Transmission shifting problem

Asked by Tyler Nov 26, 2018 at 12:50 AM about the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee tj with
the in-line 6 and the Quadra trac train. The
other day when I went to shift into reverse it
wouldn’t do anything. I can feel the
transmission shift into reverse but won’t
move. Then I shifted into neutral and I go
forward like I’m in drive. The tranny shifts thru
the drive gears just fine going down the road
but then I stop and shift into neutral and it
goes forward can’t even put transfer case
into neutral or 4lo. Then when I shift into
reverse it sits there. What I’m guessing is it’s
stuck in the forward gear and doesn’t want to
come out. But would that be a neutral safety
switch or a solenoid or tcm?
