2012 Mazda 6 strange noise

Asked by Nov 05, 2019 at 02:36 PM about the 2012 Mazda MAZDA6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Two things I just noticed when I turn my car off I hear a little motor running in
the engine compartment for about 20 seconds then it squeaks and shuts off.
Plus my red flashing security light on the dash continuously flashes all night
which it never did before

The motor that continues to run after the engine is shut off is the cooling fan; it runs until the temperature drops to a preset temperature. The security light should flash when the car is off to show it's providing active security. If it wasn't flashing before, you didn't have the security system activated.

Thanks for the info yeah I know what the fan motor sounds like it's definitely not the fan motor it's a very faint tiny motor sound up near the firewall Center of motor that runs for about 20 seconds then squeaks before you can hear it shut down it even does it having the key to accessory and then shut it off

It seems that the sound is present after shutting off the engine, but it might be present before that but it's muffled by engine noise. I don't know of any motor in that vicinity, but there are parts that might sound like a motor to someone. The EGR and PCV valves are spring loaded and as the engine shuts down, they change position. Maybe it's movement of the valve that sounds like a faint motor. After the engine shuts down, the exhaust cools. Maybe it's the catalytic converter cooling and the creaking, contracting metal sounds like a motor. If the sound is more pronounce inside the car than under the hood, it could be the blend door actuators in the HVAC ductwork resetting themselves.
