You only need to replace it when there is an issue. Did your mechanic diagnose that yours needs replacing?

It's usually the tensioner that's at fault. Changing it is not a huge job although I'm not sure about the hours. Timing chains rarely if ever fail on these cars, but the tensioners do and then the timing chain can skip and then you need a new engine. Have it looked at by a technician if you're not sure. It will be money well spent.
