I have a dark blue crown victoria (2000), I'm not sure what kind of crown victoria I have. How do I know if its an police interceptor or just a basic crown victoria?

Police interceptors aren't required to have emission controls. Look for catalytic converters. They're also strictly for police work and have no carpet or upholstery in the rear seating area. They have a 100 amp alternator and a heavy duty radiator. They also are usually worn out with extremely high mileage.

Vehicle specifications are either on the door, in the driver's manual or under the hood on or near the radiator. Check the tail lights or search online with your Vin number it will tell you what year and make of vehicle.

I know this is an old question but is also a very common question so I will answer it even though it's old. All Police Interceptors after 1993 have the digits of "P71" in the VIN (vehicle Identification Number) code located on the drivers door jam and also on 4 other places on the car and frame. All Ford Police Interceptors from 1981 thru 1993 have "P72" in their VIN code. Also ALL years of P.I. (police interceptor) vehicles will have a "certified calibrated" identified 140 mph speedometer and factory dual exhaust. Hope this helps, Kenny/MrBlueOval

P71 should appear in the VIN number toward the middle. That will help determine what you have. P71 is the interceptor VIN. Also look under the rear end for a rear sway bar. Police interceptors have awesome rear stabilization where as the Mom and Pop crown vics do not have the luxury of such tight suspension in the rear. The luxury sedan does not allow the vehicle to go up to 140mph because they are governed. Also the police package has extras like cooling systems for all your systems for example brakes, cooling system, oil, trans, as well as a rear end differential cooling system and computerized under trunk mounted box in some cases. Even the detectives or non black and whites are issued the same VIN Codes as the black and whites.

Police Interceptors ARE in fact required to have emission controls, at least from 1999 up. I have owned 8 different P71s originating from states across the country; not one car didn't have catalytic converters. Just sayin... If you don't believe me, call any Ford dealership's parts department.
