I have 78 nova rs with 3 square tail lights but all other novas I see only have 2 suare tail lights can anyone explain to me why?

My 77 Chevy nova has 3 but its the concours trim package

I had a 78 nova Custom 4 speed with 3 tail lights. Pretty sure it was the transition of the Nova going toward a mid size luxury car. 79 was the end.
