How can I tell if my 2002 996 has the x51 engine option.

Do you have the window sticker? If you do it should list the options. You can also call your local Porsche dealer and have them run the VIN. They can get you a copy of the original window sticker or at least tell you all about the car when it was new.

2002 X51 would have to be after market. X51 was a factory item, featured on the 2004 Anniversary car. Quick check for the 996 only. Pop the hood. Large Silver intake? Could be X51 package. Or, take it to the Dyno. X51 would be 303 to 309 at the rear wheels.

X51 was also on the 2003 C2/C4 range, I have an 03 X51 Cab. Look for the third radiator, the upgraded air filter
