Car wont start with key
I have a 92 pontiac firebird I've changed the ignition switch
and had new Keys made. The locksmith guy was able to
crank it with his lock craft decoder box but dosent start
with actual key....Anyone know what might be wrong ?
You have the VATS security system with the visible chip on the key. I hope you have the original key. You need to take that key and the template that came with the lock cylinder to your local GM dealer to determine which VATS key you have. There were 15 possibilities. Once you know which key you have (number 1 through 15) they will use the template for cutting the new keys. If they don't have your key blank in stock you can get the correct blank from eBay, Amazon, etc. then have your new keys cut anywhere. Such as Home Depot, your local hardware store, etc. You'll also need proof of ownership of the vehicle when you visit the GM dealer. The vehicle registration and your driver's license is sufficient proof. HTH. -Jim
Better give 80 16 a good rating he gave you a lot of good information!
GM sells a bypass harness you can easily install provided you want to disable the VATS system. They are about $20 and installs at the steering column under the dash. Contact a parts supplier and they can order one for you if that is the way you want to go.
These kits probably cost more than the correct VATS key and then you don't have the protection of the security system. Not a trade off I'd like to make. But that's just me. -Jim
Or you could buy the harness that defeats the Vats system and bypass it for $20 that sounds like a great idea and then if you do that then you could probably install your own aftermarket alarm system get the same features that the vats system offered you that's an option too but like Jim says you might just want to get the right key from the dealership coded and then you'll be back in business unless the Vats system is causing additional problems I don't know?
Ok thanks for help
I have the right key made for cut buy the dealer which is a number 3 key
You're welcome. Glad to help. So is it working now? -Jim
