My 4th gen has about 167,800 miles on it and I have had no real issues with it so far. I've replaced obvious things recently, fuel filter, spark plugs, I am about to replace an accessory belt, and a CV boot as well. A couple of unresolved issues I've had that keep the check engine light on are my vehicle speed sensor, which causes the cruise control to cut in and out, and one of my O2 sensors(this one is due to a small oil leak). As far as I've heard from other Maxima drivers, and with my experience, as long as you take good care of your car you shouldn't have too many issues at all. But then again every car has its quirks and not every one is made the same.

Our 97 has an intermittent Check Engine due to Vehicle Speed Sensor Code: PO500. Also just got a code regarding some communication error, PO600.
