2020 MINI Cooper recommended gasoline?

For my recently leased Mini Cooper 2-door hardtop, I know the dealership
first filled it with premium gasoline. I looked at the manual and it says mid-
range to premium is okay.

My parents say that filling it with regular gas is also fine too, since we're only
leasing it and I'm still a student (affordability).

Would there be serious issues if I start filling the car with regular gas instead
of what's recommended? (Given that the lease term is 3 years)

Use what the manual says. You may lose some fuel economy as the computer retards the timing trying to compensate for low octane gas. It is a little too late to consider economy.

89 to 91 would be preferred. A few cents per gallon more.
