Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi all, I have a 2000 Xterra XE base mod. When it's cold she starts rough
she goes to about 1200 rpms then comes back down to around 1000rpms
and runs great. This happens daily but once i get it started there are no more
rough starts until the next day after sitting all night. Battery, alternator and
starter seem fine. Any ideas? The only problem I've had with it in the past 5
years is a pin hole leak in the power steering. Thanks for any replies!

Also could be the fuel pump going south, or the distributor.

Thanks for the replies. Even though I have no check engine light if I took it to the local auto parts store and have them hook up their computer is there a chance it will show a code? I would have zero ideas on trouble shooting something like blown headgasket or cracked head. I can do basics like alternators and water pumps. Is there a way to check the distributor? I'm trying to work my way down a list of problems based on price and this one seems to be a good place to start. Thanks again!

It might just need a tune up. Clean the air intake sensors, Idle Air Control valve and the throttle body too.

Been checking some other forums, F_O_R and the exp mechanics I have talked to seem to kinda agree with you. They suggest a tune up, fuel injection cleaner, cleaning the intake sensors and the Idle Air Control valve and the throttle body too until I get it pinned down. :) Some of this is kinda out of my area so i bought a Chiltons book for my make and model for around $10. on Amazon. Thanks for the info and I will let you know what happens!

+1 on the IAC valve cleaning. Also note that there's a relearn procedure you need to go through for the gas pedal position, throttle position sensor, and IACV when you replace or repair the IACV (or even just clean your throttle body in some instances). Failure to do so will result in a higher idle speed that will also throw a CEL.
