2000 Xterra XE starts rough and idles rough for about 10 seconds after start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have had this Xterra for 4 years now with zero issues. About a week ago i
went to start it and it took a few seconds longer than usual and it also had a
rough idle for few seconds until the RPMs dropped and everything seemed
fine. Everything i have looked at online is almost always " My Xterra idles
rough when warmed up" My problem is the opposite. It runs good when
warmed up and will also start like it should if i have already started it earlier
in the day. I have no check engine light. As far as cars go I'm a weekend
warrior at best so any advice would be very much appreciated! I know this
could be a number of issues.

Probably time to tune it up, change the air filter and clean the throttle body. Use a good fuel system cleaner in the gas such as Techron.

Wouldn't that possibly cause a check engine light to come on or no? @G A

To set a code the head gasket leak would have to be bad enough to cause a misfire. Overheating and white exhaust smoke are also symptoms of a HG leak.

Thanks for clearing that up. I will head over to one of the local auto parts stores for a free scan just to make sure and go from there.

Just an fyi (should have said this earlier) this xterra has zero symptoms of over heating or white exhaust. Misfire? Maybe but as i stated before it only last a few seconds then the RPMs go down to normal and all is well.
