If it is a rapid series of clicks it is a voltage problem, possible bad battery or dirty cables, if it is just one loud click then the starter has failed or your engine has seized.

Check the battery 60 months old time to replace it. Have it checked for 12.6 volts and a load test preformed on it. Terminals need to be clean and tight not corroded, grounds are a common issue, Cables / wires get oxidized after 16yrs IF everything appears OK Have a voltage drop test done on the starter circuit. Very BASIC

I'm not sure if it's the problem. But I have a 95 maxima and it does the same thing. It just makes a single clicking noise.. I'm not sure if there's a deeper issue with my car or not but for me, I put my car in acc/start and shift the car in reverse then back into park, turn off the car, and start the car normally and it works.
