Back then, all GM cars with that feature, not the Powerglide, had the SUPER mode. It set gear sifting sooner.
Ed deserves a best answer click for that! He is correct! My 1970 Pontiac Catalina with the Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission had the Super (S) on the shifter selector as well!! Jim
Jim; Thanks for the compliment..... A little story: We had a highly modified "67 GTO that came with a 3-dpeed Turbo-Hydramatic and the Hurst dual-gate slap-shifter. The engine we used was larger and about 800 horsepower. I wanted to install a Chrysler 4-speed Torque-Flight with a funny-button shifter, but the owners of the car wanted to stay with the Hurst shifter..... I got a modified trans from B&M: the Hydro-Stick, Still had three speeds which made drag racing more difficult and a bit slower. But the Hurst L-S-D shifter then worked the gears, First, Second, Third. So in the mod, I guess you could say that the "S" stood for second gear..... Had to feather the manual clutch in first and second to keep the RPMs up, so I got it to act more lie a 5-speed than a three. Ran consistently 10.2 to 10.4 seconds.
You're welcome, Ed. Cool story, thanks for sharing!! Jim
