97 Ranger only makes one click when I try to start

A couple months ago my starter went out and had it
replaced. Its been working like a charm ever since, except
until last Friday when I went to leave for work and it just
made one click...just like it did when the starter went out.
So I had a friend come check it out and thought it was the
starter too. So I took it back and exchanged it for a new one
since it was under warranty. I put it in myself and then tried
to start it....same thing!!! When I try to crank it, after a few
times the doors lock then unlock themselves for some
reason. What should I do?

First try jumping the vehicle to see if it will start. If it starts have alternator tested should be charging at 14 volts if not replace alternator if charging ok have battery tested.

the locking and unlocking part you mentioned is unrelated. Happens when you repeatedly turn the key from off to run a certain number of times. (8 maybe? can't remember) That signifies the vehicle is in programming mode for the keyless entry fobs.
