Car won't accelerate past 70 mph

I just bought a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse
2.0L DOHC with 170K+ miles. I was hoping
to make this a project like car since I
bought it so cheap. I am having a bit of a
problem with the acceleration however.
The car takes like 10 seconds to get to 40,
way slower than my 2007 Ford Fusion.
Also when I'm on the freeway and I try to
accelerate past 60 mph it gets a bit difficult
but eventually I get it to 70 mph and after
that it's impossible to go any faster 70
mph. I was wondering if any of you had
any idea what the problem could be.
Maybe the engine is just old and tired ???

It is possible that a catalytic converter is melted and / or plugged causing an exhaust restriction. Fuel pressure could be too low and there could be other issues. Is the check engine light on? If so what are the codes?
