Look to your transmission -- torque convertor most likely if it is an automatic. Not likely that there is an electronic sensor causing this problem, more likely a transmission problem.

No, not an automatic. Have forgotten where and when and what, but vague memory persists of electric/electronic widget, with a nothing name like power controller, that goes on end of gearbox. I am with a german made escort, which could be different to american ones ?
