sounds like the linkage bar going to the inside handle popped off, pull the door skin off and look inside the door for thin metal rod hanging loose and pop it back on to the door handle.

if thats not it ,more than likely its the rod end towards the door latch, look in the door close to where the door latch is and there is probably a linkage rod that is not connected,

Just had this problem with daughters 96 cougar, the guys figured it out it is the interior door handle that is stripped, the gear is plastic inside and it is worn so replaced it and it works fine now have to take the interior door panel off to get to it but was not to hard to fix. Good luck with it.
