Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2001 Mercury sable will roll while
in park. What causes this and how do
I fix it? Right now I am using my

The first thing to check is for worn or mis adjusted linkage, it may not be going all the way into park at the transmission. If the linkage is good then the park sprag (gear) may be stripped

Ditto, check slop in shift linkage to ensure you are going into park, then check park pawl (another name for 'sprag'). If you happen to have a 4F50N Automatic Transmission they do have issues with the parking pawl. That tranny was in use from 2001 to 2007. Go "VIN Decoder", select any of them and type in your VIN. It will list what type of transmission you have. If you see 4F50N (asI'm sure you will), then you are likely being affected by a known issue with that tranny. You can Google "4F50N Automatic Transmission park pawl" to learn more about them.
