2003 mercury sable transmission stopped working.

It may be that one of the drive axles broke, not that the transmission stopped working, or could be the flywheel & torque converter disconnected. The flywheel converter problem would be rare, but not unheard of. Have you checked the fluid level in the trans to see if it is very low or not registering on the dip stick?
