Wondering why my 04 mountaineer front tires didn't turn when it was stuck on a slight uphill grade.

AWD works a little differently than 4WD in that it uses the ABS feature on the vehicle to "brake" a slipping wheel. So, if the sensor detected that you were slipping on any wheel, it would tell the car to stop trying to grip on that tire. Hence you would detect no "spin".
