1998 Explorer The switch on the dash says AUTO - 4X4 HIGH - 4X4 LOW. Does this mean AUTO is 2 wheel drive?

I also asked how can I tell if it's an Eddie Bauer?  It's not leather interior, and there are no tags in or on the vehicle, but when I put the VIN in on AUTOCHECK, it comes up Eddie Bauer. Here's the VIN, see if it helps: 1FMZU34E1WZB69981

There was no mistaking the EB I had for an EB. It was everywhere ... stitched into the seats, outside decals, etc. The Eddie Bauer's are the top of the line Explorer with just about every amenity you could imagine. Mine even had a trouble light that you plug into the cigarette lighter. I checked your VIN# and it said "Eddie Bauer/XL/XLT'', so my guess is that the VIN# refers to body type or style, and not model?? As for the 'AUTO', it is like a '4x4 on demand'. It senses when you need 4WD and kicks in automatically. In 'AUTO' mode, it gives 25% power to the front and 75% to the rear. If it senses the need, it distributes the power to the wheels that need it.
