Car overheating when AC is on

Asked by NYresident Apr 08, 2019 at 08:06 PM about the 2012 Dodge Charger R/T Road & Track RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello All, I have a 2012 Dodge Charger RT
with about 52k miles and last summer I
started experiencing issues where the car
was overheating only when I turned the AC
on. The shop I sometimes go to replaced the
Tstat and everything was fine for the rest of
the summer until today when I tried to turn
the AC on and I noticed 1. A slight coolant
smell and 2. The car was overheating again.
What are the possible issues? Where do I
start with my diagnosis?

Check for any leaks. Also check and make sure the cooling fans are spinning, they usually spin when the engine gets hot enough or when you turn the AC on. It could have low coolant or the passage may be clogged.
