While driving the cold air keeps the engine from overheating if the car is not leaking you might have a stuck thermostat or no coolant

Are the cooling fans working?, if they are, check coolant flow, could be a bad pump, stuck thermostat or low coolant level.

If you haven't replaced it in the last 2 years, don't even bother checking it, just replace it, it's very easy to do. How many miles on the car? the water pump might be bad. Her's a link on how to replace thermostat... https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-thermostat

To check for coolant flow, When engine is cold, safely remove radiator cap, run engine til it reaches normal operating temperature, you should see coolant flowing through the radiator. Are the cooling fans working?
