Can I put an alternator from a mid-90s Ford fiesta
in a 2004 Ford Focus

No you can't do this as the Focus has what is called a smart charge system. Part of the voltage regulater is built into the cars main Engine Management Computer. You should either have your alternator repaired or fit a new one or good second hand one with the same part number as the 2004 Focus that you have already.
