Question type: General

i have a ford mustang and its been overheating once in a while. putting more water in and bleeding the air out above the water pump seemed to me working. yesterday i drove uphill a couple miles and it was making a ticking noise as i accelerated it got worse. i pulled over and checked it out. it sounds like it was coming from the water pump. i get back in and drive off and temperature starts rising along with loss of power.i pulled over and it died. i wait for it to cool down and put more water in it and drive home. didnt make the noise again so i parked it for a couple days and take valve cover off and it looks fine. i think its oil pump or cracked block but im not sure. if you would hear a cracked block. i thought it was heads or gaskets but noise is deffinetly coming from under water pump.can anyone give me insight to this problem.

Sounds like maybe you need new water pump. Pull off belt and spin by hand. The loss of power and cooling could be bad bearings on pump. How many miles on car?

Bad headgasket will leave u with milky coolant from the oil mixing and white smoke from exhaust

It could be a broken water pump. If you had a cracked block or a gasket breach you'd probably see a white smoke out of the exhaust continuously. Often overheating can be a sign of a malfunctioning thermostat or some blockage in the cooling system. There is always a loss of power when a motor overheats since friction increases with the temperature of the motor. Valve covers have nothing to do with the cooling system. If you are not blowing white smoke the problem is most likely some blockage in the cooling system itself, and not as major as a cracked block or failing head gasket. What engine is this ? The 4.6L? The 3.6L?
