Ford Edge 2017 Engine Replacement under Warrenty

For a vehicle that is closet to three years old, you won't get a new one. They will keep replacing parts till the warranty runs out. Replacing a whole engine sounds extreme to me for an engine light.

It's hard for me to understand what is happening, but something leaks onto the engine? I didn't have my car for a month and got it back for two weeks and was told today i probably won't have it again for a month to get a new engine.

Maybe you have a Lemon car case. Look up the laws in your state.

I have just had the same problem. Service engine light came on and took it to the dealer for repair. They told me the whole engine need to be replaced. Just bought the car 8 months ago. I have put less than 20,000 miles on the car. They told me that engine coolant is seeping into the cylinder and when that happens they have to replace the whole engine. the service guy at the dealer said he had five of them just like it in their service department. That makes it sound like a manufacturer defect to me. to put a new motor in it without the defect being fixed is like kicking the can down the road. How do you bring something like this just someone's attention. There needs to be a recall. Who do you contact?

I am currently in the same exact situation. Bought a 2017 Edge in february with 50,000 miles on it. Engine light came on and then would go off. Last week got a heat sensor warning on the way home from work. Drove less than 5 miles home. Let it sit overnight and checked coolant in the morning. Coolant was almost empty. No leak under car. Drove to the store and got coolant. Took it to dealer and they read an engine misfire code. It has been leaking coolant into the #2 cylinder. It’s still under warranty and they are replacing the entire engine. Should I be concerned driving a “newer” car with a replaced engine? Im clueless as to how to approach this situation. Be thankful they are fixing it or mad that it happened in the first place? Or both?

We are experiencing this exact problem right now: engine light came on and heater started blowing cold. Took it in and they said coolant was leaking into the engine (no leaks anywhere on the ground) and the engine has to be replaced. Only we are 3,000 miles out of warranty (2018 Edge) and they said it will cost over $9k to replace the engine. From the other posts here, this seems to be a known issue. I am concerned about replacing the engine if the defect is not resolved and it could happen again (based on Kristy's post). Not sure what to do! Thought we had a great car...

@Loaded80's post could have been written by me almost word for word! Bought mine used less than 1 year ago -- put less than 15K on it. Started getting an intermittent Check Engine light (code was checked as a misfire) and then no heat. They added coolant and less than 2 weeks later, got an overheated engine warning light... Drove to a repair place and have been fighting with the repair shop, extended warranty company, and now Ford with no or end in sight. FORTUNATELY, I came to find out that the powertrain has an extended warranty on it up to 100K (I'm currently sitting at 63K) so it *should* be covered under warranty... However, I'm scared to death that they will claim the vehicle wasn't properly maintained since it overheated and had to have coolant added despite the symptoms meeting the Technical Service Bulletin to a T. (I don't trust any of these mechanics -- I've already set over 300 bucks on fire trying to get this diagnosed and towed from one shop to another. I'm just spitting mad... I still owe more on the vehicle than it is worth (even if it was running). I've only ever had 2 vehicles in 25 years that have had catastrophic engine issues -- one was a Buick and now the Ford... I'm never going to buy an American car again at this point...

My 2017 Ford Edge, 70k miles, engine light came on. Took it to the dealership for diagnostic. Coolant leaking into cylinder 2. Engine had to be replaced. $8,400 quote to put a new engine in, and vehicle is out of warranty. The service advisor at the dealership and the mechanic both admitted it is a known defect and said there is a TSB bulletin on the issue. The service advisor submitted a claim directly to Ford Motor Corp asking them to cover at least part of the repair cost. After a month of negotiation, they agreed to do the repair at the discounted warranty price of $6,800 and agreed to cover 40% of the repair cost. They gave a 3 year unlimited mile warranty on the new engine, and offered a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty on the rest of the car at no extra charge. A nice gesture, but in the end I still had to pay more than $4,000 out of pocket to replace an engine on a three year old car that cost me $40,000 when I purchased it. Completely unacceptable failure of the Ford product.

Going through this right now on a 2016 edge with 76k. Luckily I bought an extended warranty when I purchased the car. Hopefully it covers the 8700.00 cost to replace engine. This should be a class action suit against Ford at this rate.

I am experiencing the same thing with the engine light came on at 53k miles. Known defect but Ford will only replace at no cost under warranty. I have not asked yet what the cause was. The coolant is questionable of that being the issue but will find out when I pick it back up next week.

I'm having the same issue. 2017 Ford Edge at 65,088 miles coolant leaking into the cylinders per Ford's TSB 19-2346 and they are refusing to cover any costs because its simply out of warranty. For a known engine defect you would think they would have at least warned owners or cover some of the repair. Its only 5,000 miles out of warranty. Should have been a recall.

Same issue with my 2017 Ford Edge engine at 21K miles. If everyone who has this issue calls their local attorney general and files a complaint under the lemon laws then we are far more likely to see a recall.

I have exactly the same issue and I'm 25 miles out of powertrain warranty..Ford is only offering to pay 50% of a new engine. I just filed a complaint with the attorney general in Kansas so I will let you know the results (which take quite some time) I've specifically asked that Ford take responsibility for this known issue and put out a recall as soon as they find a fix so that the antifreeze doesn't leak into the cylinders. I suppose I'll go ahead and pay 50% of the cost of the new engine- since I need my car back :(

OMG ya'll. Ford currently has my car for this exact issue. 2017 Ford edge, something (they didn't say if it was coolant or water) leaking into cylinder 2 and they have to replace the whole engine. They've had my car for over 3 weeks. Thankfully, I bought the extended warranty because the car is sitting at 60,xxx miles so I was out of Ford warranty. We bought the car March 2019. I can't believe it has happened to so many others! Now I'm worried when I do get it back it'll keep happening! I'm in a rental right now that's covered under the extended warranty.

They do replace the whole engine. The engine does come with a 12 month warranty. I had 53,400 miles with 6k left on original warranty on my 2017 Edge Titanium. It is coolant that is leaking in cylinders. The new engine has the issue fixed. But, I may still sell it before the 12 months are up. What else don't I know??

The service manager showed me the warranty on the new engine and it is 3 years/unlimited mile warranty. I have filed a complaint with the Kansas Attorney General. I also am considering a complaint to the NHTSA.gov in an attempt to get Ford to do a recall on these defect 2.0L Ecoboost engines. Maybe everyone should go to the NHTSA.gov and file a complaint. My service guy said he has replaced at least 5 engines that have this known issue (and I'm in a small town in Kansas) so obviously there are many people having the same problem. And Ford has issued a TSB (technical service bulletin) to Ford technicians so they will know about this problem and how to proceed to fix it. And yet they have not issued a recall on this defective engine!!! Costing me about $4000 for my 50% of the engine, It infuriates me that I have no recourse other that filing a complaint- so that is what I am doing!!! Hope you all will consider doing the same.

I hate that this is happening to everyone! I am currently experiencing the same exact issue! I purchased my car used October 2019 and had to get the engine replaced January 2020. After getting my engine completely replaced, I am now having the SAME EXACT issue all over again! Please let me know if you all file a class action!

This is word for word what is happening to me‍♀️ im at 50k,just bought mine in December and the check engie light came on and it says cylinder 1 misfire P0301. They called today and said they are replacing the engine thank the lord i bought the warranty! I still owe 17k what should i do when i get it back?! Try and trade?

I just got my car back yesterday after them having it for 27 days. Thankfully, the engine replacement was covered under my extended warranty and I only had to pay my $100 deductible. They said that the new engine comes with a 3-year warranty. We will probably end up trading it in before that time is up.

Just happened to my 2017 Edge w 37k miles. Check engine light came on last week. Dropped it off at dealer, got a call about the tech svc bulletin, and that it needs a new engine. Won't get it back for 2-3 months, so they say. Under warranty, and they are providing a rental car. I'm wondering about what to do with it when I get it back as well.

Guys i just cant believe it..i though i hadmade a smart purchase. I wonder if there will be a recall? Should i try and talk to the dealer who sold to me they are the same ones working on it

How widespread is this issue and what is causing the issue. This is clearly no fault of the owners due to improper maintenance. I have a 2017 SEL 2.0L and my coolant is now below the Min mark. I brought the car into Ford for regular service in February and have put on less than 2k miles. The Ford dealers suck and Ford won't take responsibility so we have no idea how many engines will be affected. I can only imagine these issues will be compounded as these vehicles pack on more miles. Ford was forced to settle lawsuits on the dual shift auto transmissions with the Focus and Fiesta models. Ford clearly has a manufacturing defect maybe in the aluminum casting process. Ford clearly does not want repeat customers. This may be one of the most unreliable cars that I have ever owned and I have had VW/Audis. Unreal and they don't care at all.

Mark, Did you have a warranty on it? The warranty should completely cover a new engine. I get mine back tomorrow after them having it since 7/4/20. I dont have to pay a dime and they replaced it with a 2020 edge engine but I am very anxious about what to do once i get it back. I could have another problem or never could again ‍♀️

I am under warranty for another 2.5 years or 20k miles but I am seeing many people where this happens just out of warranty. That is my concern, how widespread is the issue and do I get an extended warranty at this point or just get rid of the car before the 60k mark. I am completely distrustful of Ford and this engine at this point since this is clearly a known major defect and Ford just seems to say, "well you are out of warranty, that will be $9k"

Yes i totally understand,im super frustrated too! I will have to get a extended warranty after 84k or trade before not sure what i will do either bc i dont want to be under water financially if i trade. Hopefully i have no trouble with this new engine

I feel like these issues need to go "viral". I see similar postings on Reddit, NHTSA, Repairpal, etc. A government entity will need to force Ford to extend the warranties on these vehicles which I think is doubtful otherwise owners are stuck with a potential major problem. I spoke to a guy at AAA who has an automotive column and he was aware of these issues with the 2.0L.

I cannot believe this! This EXACT issue is happening with my 2018 Ford Edge SEL. I bought it used 2 weeks ago with 80,800 miles on it and had barely driven it 500 miles when the light came on last Saturday. Took into Ford dealership Monday and was told yesterday the engine needs to be replaced. Unreal. I thought I was getting a really good deal. So thankful I paid way below Kelly BB suggested price and was told it is covered by the extended warranty that came with it, but still feel awful. No matter what I end up having to pay (hopefully only the deductible), I may file a complaint. This is RIDICULOUS!

Heather, you should definitely file a complain with NHTSA.gov. How many other people have had this issue or will have this issue in the future and have never reported it publicly. It seems like this is becoming a widespread issue and Ford will not cover this if out of warranty. Thanks for posting.

We also had this issue. We purchased a 2017 Edge a year ago. We did not however purchase the extended warranty. We have purchased these on almost all of our vehicles and RV's in the past and have never once used them. Bad Decision! In June 2020 the engine light came on. We called our local Ford dealership to make an appointment. They were not able to look at it for a few days, but was told it would be fine to drive until the appointment. We needed the car to get to work and back and wanted it looked at sooner so we took it in to have it checked with a reputable service provider. He informed us that we defiantly needed to take it to our local Ford dealership as the code it was throwing was a major engine problem. He told us that there was Technical Service Bulletin on this vehicle and that the engine most likely would need to be replaced. The codes were P0301 and P0304, which means there was a defect in the engine that would allow coolant intrusion into the cylinder. We immediately called Ford and made another appointment. We took it in and after a day and a half were told that it was indeed an engine defect and the engine would need to be replaced. We were also told that we should not drive this vehicle as it could fail while driving. Thank god we did not follow their first advice that it would be fine to drive! So long story short we had to replace the engine, $6400, and Ford is not at this time going to take responsibility. However the dealership told us to be sure and hang onto all our documentation in case it did go to recall and even said it was looking like it will. But they could have just been trying to make us feel better. Very Frustrating!

I just found out today my 2016 Ford Edge needs an engine . Coolant leaking into #2Cylinder. My car is out of the extended warranty . The dealership gave me the number to Ford . That was a joke and a total waste of time. I told the customer service rep. If my car was covered by warranty I would not need to call them. I should not need to replace an engine at 116,000 miles. I have reported my problem to the NHTSA. If you have this problem you need to report it. There needs to be a recall . Will seriously start looking at other Makes of cars.

Dealership has had my 2017 F150 for nearly 2 MONTHS! Started with puff of smoke every morning. Eventually after replacing an injector I got it back only to have it start smoking again in 3 weeks. I bought my own OBD and diagnosed a leak in #3 cylinder. I took it back to the dealership and they tried to tell me white smoke was ok. I wouldn't stand for that BS and insisted they fix it. The dealership gave me a loaner. I had to call a few days later as to what was going on and was informed I had a coolant leak into cylinder #3! Claimed to have sent head out and was ok so they were going to replace head gasket and should have it back in a couple of days.. They had my truck10 days or so all ready. Since then they have had every imaginable error and they just cant fix my vehicle. Valve seals, wrong valve, cam phaser error, injectors, and the list goes on. I think they have put this together a least 4 different times during the past 7 weeks. You can bet your ass I am pursuing at the very least an engine replacement as this is still under full warranty. I am reporting this to as many different forums and official sites as I can. I will eventually pursue legal action if I don't receive my satisfaction

Same issue 2018 Ford Edge SE, 92,000 miles engine light came on and after a 3-day diagnostic test by Ford Dealer, they said Coolant leaking into the Cylinders and have to replace the engine $7K. It's not covered under the factory warranty anymore.....got hit with this after being out of work for 4 months because of the COVID shutdowns. Talked with several people that are friends or family at other Ford Dealerships and apparently its a very widespread issue that likely needs to be Recalled by Ford. Ford usually is the best and is morally responsible, I just don't know why they haven't owned up to this deficiency yet? My guess is a recall of this engine will cost them several billion dollars. They will likely have to be forced to issue this recall because of the cost, but I hope Ford does the right thing and owns it without having to be forced to do so.

This just happened to me today. Same story as the rest of you. I, too, thought I made a great purchase. I’m out of warranty but should not be replacing my engine at 100k miles.

Just got my 2018 Ford Edge Titanium back today after 3+ weeks of the dealer having it. Apparently they had at least one other car with this same issue ahead of mine, to be fixed. At least my new engine was still covered under warranty. I will never buy another Ford again. I plan to trade this one in ASAP!

Add me to your list of unhappy Ford Edge owners. We've had this happen to two Edge's. Long time Ford fan that will never buy another Ford. Our Edge was a 2018.

I have a 2017 Ford Edge and it needs a total rebuild as well due to a defective engine. Same scenario. Coolant leaking into the long block. Parts on back order for MONTHS! Dealership tells me to keep driving it until engine is in . What a joke. Ford Corporate should really just replace these cars.

Update: I filed a repair claim directly with Ford. After several weeks of negotiating they’ve agreed to pay 50% of the cost. My car is in now for the repair. File a claim - it’s worth a shot!

Our 2018 Ford Edge Titanium has 52,000 miles and we had the engine light go on in early November 2020 and we were told that “we got good news and bad news” on our voicemail and we were rushed out of the dealership with a rental car and minimal information The good news it’s covered under warranty. The bad news - due to Covid it’s going to take three weeks. That three weeks will now become two to three months to find an engine and repair so late January 2021 - maybe! Use Ford Assistance as your advocate!! They will be your interface with the dealership when communications break down. They will work on getting you rental car reimbursement - they got us $2000 in rental car assistance while we wait for the repairs.

Similar problem here in Central Ohio with 2016 Ford Edge, Titanium, 2.0L Ecoboost engine. At approximately 53,000 miles, coolant leek in #2 cylinder destroyed engine. However, even under posted drive-train warranty, it was a challenging experience to have appropriately repaired by Ford. The replacement engine now has nearly 20,000 miles with no issues - YET! The rest of the car is in really good shape so hate that I even have to debate with myself whether or not to trade in for new car just on the off chance I have a major problem with engine number two. Paid in excess of $40,000 for this car new - expected so much more in terms of longevity and durability. Again, other than the ongoing mental stress related to engine dependability (which is A LOT), love the SUV.

Just an FYI on "Central Ohio" 2016 Ford Edge; was told by dealership that the new engine is only warranted for one year/12,000 miles. That means that my second engine is now already out of warranty. All my routine maintenance has been meticulously scheduled/completed at my local Ford dealership - the same dealership I bought the car brand new.

Just found this post. This is happening to me right now. Bought a 2017 edge less than 40k miles on car and I need a new engine. It’s covered under warranty but Ford is very aware of this issue. Even when I called 1800 Ford she sounded like yep heard this story before..

Add me to the list of unhappy Ford Edge owners. My 2017 with 42,000 miles on it now needs a new engine. Darn thing isn’t even paid off. Says it’s under warranty but I don’t see the dealer until next week.

Just got home with my 2017 Edge SEL. 31,000 miles, coolant leaking into cylinder 2. New Long block engine covered under warranty. Took 20 days to get it done. Very concerning.

Same issue, just got my engine replaced, thank God I had 500 miles left on my warranty so they replaced it for free.

I just got my 2018 Ford Escape back after 7 weeks. I asked my service advisor if the problem had been fixed in the new engine and he said no. According to him Ford doesn't know what's causing it. When the issue first surfaced they were told to replace various different parts but when that didn't solve the problem they now are told to replace the entire engine and hope it doesn't happen again to the same owner. Needless to say I'm not happy with that answer especially since they only have a 12,000mi/12 month warranty which amounts to nothing since I have a little more than that left on the original warranty.

Update: traded mine in for a Toyota Highlander. What a shame. My first Ford and I really liked the car but if I can’t trust it to take my family on a road trip, it won’t be sitting in my driveway.

Same problem here. Just found out today that I need a new engine due to coolant issue. 2017 Ford Edge SEL with 42000 miles on it. Covered under warranty so only $100. Thank God but damn what an inconvenience. I feel like I don't even want the carcanymore.

Same issue...2017 Ford Edge, cracked block and leaking coolant into one of the cylinders. Dealership replaced the engine with a redesigned "long block". My question to those who have already went through this process, have you had ongoing problems after having the block replaced? We're trying to decide whether to keep the car at this point or get our money back and look into a different vehicle altogether.

Six months ago I had purchased my car off my lease, a little voice told me to get the extended warranty which I did. A certain amount of comfort knowing you don’t have to dole out a lot of money to get the repair done, but what’s Stopping it from happening again. I see no alternative from any of your contributions to this forum that would disuade me from trading it in for something non-Ford, In spite of the fact that it’s been a great car for 80,000 km

I have same problem 2017 ford edge they have had the car since March for engine replacement they said it was on backorder. This is Fords answer to a recall.

I have a 2016 Ford Edge. Engine had to be replaced last year. Now it has to be replaced again. They need to fix this ASAP!!!!!!!

My car is currently at the Ford dealer for the exact same issue that others have posted, at 78,000 miles, check engine light came on and off, until it finally came on and stayed on, heat was blowing cold air, and I took it to the dealer. Dealer stated coolant was going into the engine, and the engine needs to be replaced. 8900 however I got the aftermarket warranty and it seem like they are going to pay for it, after inspection to make sure wasn't the driver fault. Ford really should recall the engine. Mines is a 2.0 Liter.

Purchased a 2017 Ford Edge SEL with 54000 K on it, just after I drove off the lot the check engine light came on. Took it back to the dealer and they replace 2 ignition coils and all the plugs., 4 days later check engine light came back on with same code was told coolant was leaking into #2 cylinder and block need to be replaced. This happened in Aug 2022 still waiting for replacement block. Driving a new loaner from the dealer, as a long time Ford owner I don't think I will be purchasing another Ford.

Purchased a 2017 Ford Edge SEL 2.0 L Eco Boost. Love my Edge but the engine light kept coming on so I finally took it in to Ford. Needs a new engine due to coolant leak into the block. Thank God I purchased the Ford extended warranty since my Edge has 60K on it after owning it for almost 4 years. In a loaner right now and don't know how long repair will take.

Same story here! 2017 Ford Fusion- coolant leak into cylinder 2. Needs engine replaced 62k miles, called Ford to see if there was anything recourse from Ford at all. Said I will hear from the service manager tomorrow. I bought this car brand new, garage kept in immaculate condition so frustrating

Same thing here, 2017 Ford Edge, coolant leaking into cylinder 2. Now in my SECOND engine replacement. Hard to believe how many people Ford burned, they knew this was a problem and still won’t recall it.

Same story, different day. I purchased my 2017 Edge SEL,EcoBoost, brand new, her name is Red. All maintenance done in a timely manner, kept in garage and only 41,200 miles. Check engine light came on and RPM would zoom or bottom out. Took to local Ford dealer for oil change and to check the light. Just got the call from dealer that Red needs a new engine due to coolant leaking into cylinder. The claim was just filed to Ford for approval, after approval the engine will be ordered and when engine arrives it will be 2- 3 days to replace. The new engine "should" be revised so as not to have the same problem. We shall see. Best thing is the deal returned Red to my work place at 4pm, I went to car at 430pm and they LEFT HER RUNNING. Some days ya just cannot win.

My 2017 Edge has the same issue with coolant getting in the #2 cylinder. I have 76000 miles and out of warranty also. They charged me $7800 to put in a new engine. It’s totally CRAZY that Ford will not reimburse any money out to help with their error making an engine that is a POS. I’ve contacted Ford complaint department and the NHTSA but here we are 6 weeks later and nothing from either one of them. I’ve called both and they say the same thing every time that someone will be contacting me soon. It’s turning into a Big joke about them helping out the little people out Herrera’s.

Same issue here with my 2018 Edge. Needs a new engine due to coolant intrusion and dealership quoted $8,100. I thought I did the right thing by purchasing an extended warranty since I bought it used 2 years ago, but the claim was denied due to manufacturing defect and the warranty is through 3rd party. Contacted Ford complaint department as well as NHTSA but am not holding my breath for a response or assistance. Absolutely ridiculous that Ford will not own up to their mistakes and send out a recall on this engine. I still owe 20k on it which is about 18K more than it's worth at this point. Extremely disappointed.

I guess I am getting in line with the rest you. Bought the car 10 months ago - one owner car, dealer maintained. Check engine light, losing coolant into cylinder two. $12k quoted for an engine replacement, 9k miles out of powertrain warranty. Dealer, an independent mechanic, ford customer service all echo the same thing. This is a known issue, but no recall relief.
