transmission problem

Asked by Jwill84 Feb 27, 2017 at 11:36 PM about the 1988 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

hello.  I have an 88 chevy k1500 5.7l/350. after
allowing a friend to borrow my truck while on
vacation, the transmission went out.  great friend
right?  well at least he got me another used 700r4.

After installing the used tranny with all new seals,
filter,  gaskets, and fluid everything seemed to be
just fine.  shifted like a champ.  well then one day
by bro-n-law was driving, pulling an empty 16 ft
trailer,  the transmission gave out and was just
spitting fluid out up by the torque converter.  it just
pours out.  my question is,  does anyone know
what the exact problem could be? is it possible
that torque converter seal wasn't set properly? it's
just funny how it did it only a week after the swap
and never showed any signs of going out or
messing up.  any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

If you used a old torque converter, it may have a groove worn into the shaft, seal area, and also when replacing the seal in the front pump of the trany, there is a bushing there that guides the torque converter that should be changed out .

thank you rowefast. that's what we were assuming. I'd just hate to get another tranny if the one I have is still good. and yes we did use an old torque converter. I really appreciate your time. thanks

Your welcome. That would be a fairly easy fix but the trany has to come back out.

Yeah true. but if that fixes the problem and saves me from buying another tranny, I'm happy to drop her back out. I really appreciate your time and I'm glad that there are still people willing to help one another out. different times these days. lol. I'll keep ya posted on if that is my solution. thanks
