speed odometer is reading higher than the real speed

Asked by Joe May 06, 2020 at 07:57 PM about the 1998 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My speed odometer was reading 7 miles faster than actual speed. I changed
the speed sensor and now it reads about 4 miles higher than actual speed. I
have always replaced my tires with factory size tires. What else could it be?

Believe it or not the speedometer reading 4 MPH higher than your actual speed is normal for this vehicle. My 93 Caprice was the same way and I bought it brand new. I remember reading a notation about it in the factory shop manual. My 94 Fleetwood is the same as well. Back in those days GM did that to help drivers of their vehicles go under the speed limit and be less likely to get a speeding ticket! Hope that helps! Jim

Go up a tire size and the speedometer will be closer.
