Fan belt is squealing

Asked by Camby1151 Apr 16, 2019 at 07:08 AM about the 1969 Pontiac Firebird Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I run through the gears, as the RPMs increase, my fan belt begins to squeal. Even on the highway in 4th gear if I get on it, it will squeal. The tension is correct (I don't think it should be any tighter) and the belts and pulleys are near new condition.
Any thoughts to correct it?

Does the fan have a clutch? Some of those older heavier fans would resist abrupt changes in RPM that could cause belt slippage and resultant squealing. Assuming your belt is properly aligned and tightened, you may want to consider a lighter fan. Switching to a clutch fan may also help, it allows the fan to spin up to speed without the abrupt RPM change. Bur before any of that I would triple check the alignment of the pulleys. You could also take an emery cloth to the pulleys to ensure they offer some traction to the belt.
