Mitsubishi Lancer 2009 Overheat

Asked by Madison Apr 18, 2020 at 05:55 AM about the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently my car has been overheating on my
faster/longer drives. I get a transmission
warning where I have to pull over and let it
cool for 10-15 minutes. I had it looked at, and
my temperature gauge was changed but it is
still over heating. The oil was recently
changed, coolant is full, new battery. I’m
thinking it is the valves or belt that may need
to be changed. Any suggestions?

if vehicle is overheating, then it's a possibility it could be a thermostat (t-stat stuck closed). and once you replace t-stat, you must bleed the system (get all air out of cooling system) and after bleeding and driving, top up coolant properly.

Overheating while driving is a coolant circulation problem. Thermostat, water pump, or restricted cooling system passages. Hope that helps! Jim

I just got an 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS 2.0L n/a with the CVT trans & had the same "slow down" warning on our 1st shakedown run. I'm an independent mobile tech & thought ahead with 5 qts new CVT fluid in the trunk with my Snap-on scanner. Scanner after parking for 20 mins & found transmission codes. A fluid code & secondary shift code. I pulled the stick & was short 1 quart. Borrowed a funnel from a gas station shop & add the quart, cleared codes & drove home without any more issues. Added a fresh high mileage oil change & filter got rid of the oil light as well. 2 owners including me with 302456. Systematically going through it with fluids & now physical components. Everything still works at this moment.
