I have a 00' Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer I have a leak coming from under the starter on the engine smell like antifreeze could that be the water pump and also it started to shutter and it had a smell of burnt wires and the check engine light started blinking off and on?

My 2000 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer started to shutter and wouldn't go over 45mph my check engine light started blinking off and on then I smelled something burning like burnt wires and sulfur. After I get to work I looked at my vehicle and seen a leak coming from the front of my engine and under the starter it smells like antifreeze. What could be the problems of my vehicle?

The 4.0 engine of that era has an upper radiator hose connection which may be made of plastic. It contains the thermostat and engine temp sending unit. After a while they develop a small crack. The water runs backward toward the rear of the vehicle and runs downward toward the starter. The miss you see at 45mph most often times is a sign a complete tuneup is needed. Erratic shifting normally accompanies the miss under load. Replace the plugs and wires. Also check the coil as a failure on one of the banks will cause the same problem.
