Periodic scraping sound from brakes without applying brake pressure?

Asked by Cameron Apr 25, 2020 at 10:46 AM about the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T GT RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T GT (Track) spec with big brake kit. Original OEM brake rotors were replaced with OEM Hyundai rotors. Original OEM brake pads were replaced with third-party brake pads. When the car is in motion, without applying the brakes, there is a periodic scraping or grinding sound. It sounds similar to using a stone mortar and pestle. The frequency of the sound increases as the car moves faster. The sound is audible when the brakes are applied until the car stops. Braking effort at the pedal hasn't changed. Braking effectiveness (brake bite) is pretty much at the level when I bought the car new. I figure it's a clearance issue with the brake calipers. What is making the scraping or grinding sound?

1 Answer

My Hyundai service center resolved the issue: "...found brake pad retaining clip out of position. Repositioned clip and verified noise is gone." My brakes are back to normal, silent, operation.
