Asked by holycrux Jan 29, 2016 at 06:48 PM about the 1998 Honda Accord LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I bought a  Honda back in November and
recently is started to not pick up Speed when I hit
the gas pedal  and wasunable to accelerate no
faster than 20 miles per hour unless I was going
down a hill and had assistance the car would not
go any faster  once I picked up Speed I was fine
but whenever I had to stop at a stop sign or red
light the car with have trouble picking up Speed
again and I would hit the gas but not be moving I
already got the o-rings on the car fixed along with
the valve cover gasket and the distributor cap and
distributor replaced I also got new spark plugs so
pretty much what I'm wondering is if I should
invest more money into this car to get it fixed and
what the problem may be or should I just go ahead
and get  another car this car was bought for 2000
and has 197000 miles btw

Would the engine rev up and sound normal when you hit the gas? Is it because of the transmission or plugged catalytic converters? Like the engine is holding back.

I suspect because of the mileage that the transmission is gone. Clutch plates worn out. Was there a lot of dubree in the pan when it was pulled off? Did the filter look black?

Are any of the idiot lights lit up on the dash, like Maint Required or the check engine light ? Have you had the cars computer checked yet to see if there are any trouble codes stored in the memory? It could be something as simple as a switch adjustment is needed on the transmission or low fluid level. Start by having the car checked for codes, it could be an intermittent problem that is stored in memory, possibly as a HISTORY or PENDING code, and can help if it is there. If you don't have a code reader you can go to an AdvanceAuto Parts or AutoZone store and they will read them for free. If any are there write them down and post them here in the same order as shown on the scan(if multiple codes show). Personally I think you overpaid for the car, but at that mileage, if the car appears to be in good shape I would not be so quick to dump it just yet, because these cars do tend to run for many years with much higher mileage than what yours has on it.

If you accelerate and just revs up and it picks up speed slowly seems like the same problem that i went through last year with my 1991 honda accord 5 speed,it was the clutch

My car is having basically the same problem feels like it wants to accelerate but doesn't have to juice to also all of my dash light are on but there is no power to the turn signals and no power for accleration. But there is no problem with the shifting and hasn't stalled or died?? Any ideas?

Also when trying to accelerate, if you push the pedal to where it would be considered heavily accelerating it then would jerk once or twice and start to pick up speed, also basically stats to idle itself when not accelerating at all...???

Check your clutch lockup and or shift solenoids and pressure sensors you can get them model specific for your vehicle cheapest from eBay motors also check tranny fluid levels this will cause shifting or acceleration problems too drain the tranny if nessary and and fill with Valvoline synthetic transmission fluid and a bottle of Lucas no slip transmission fix but at the same make sure your catylic converters aren't clogged and O2 sensors are working fine because your computer had gone into limp mode for done reason it doesn't like to prevent further damage to the vehicle but acceleration is good to get you home good luck !!!

The problem could be the iac valve .after you spend money on every expert diagnosis that don't help This sensor is as critical as the gas pedal .need replacement in most Honda power lazy car.
