2007 Honda Accord loss of power rattling ion acceleration

My 2008 Honda Accord started making a rattling
sound when I accelerated at higher speeds. It’s
progressively getting worse and now has almost no
power especially when going uphill or starting from
a complete stop and the rattling sound if I continue
to accelerate and push on the gas will turn into a
really loud flapping noise.

I also noticed when it switches gears the rattling
sound does diminish somewhat. However the
problem is getting worse and I can hear the
flapping sound or that rattling sound almost
continuously while driving it. Is anybody else having
this problem and know what it might be?

There is an engine code of P0420 that’s showing a
problem with the catalyst system. Could it be my
catalytic converter?

You are correct. It is probably your catalytic converter deteriorating and plugging from the inside. Only fix is to have it changed.

I appreciate the feedback. I’m going to take it to the shop today and cross my fingers that it isn’t the cat converter because holy smokes that’ll be an expensive fix!!

There is a couple of things you can do besides purchasing a new one. Over time the cat converter will weld itself together so it probably is easier to have a new one put on. If you have time and tools to do it yourself, you can take it off and clean it. Soak it overnight in laundry detergent and it will clean out all the build-up. Or you can try the catalytic converter cleaner (ive never tried it before). Some say it works, some say it doesnt. You can also run a gallon of lacquer thinner through your tank when you have a half tank of gas and run it about 150 miles afterwards. It will burn all the impurities out, so i hear. Just a couple options for ya to try.
