What could be the issue?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently picked up a 2001 Ford Ranger. Automatic
transmission. We can fire the truck up when it's in park and
try to shift it and it will not shift. But when we put it in
neutral itll shift perfectly. What could be the issue?

I had this issue with a 2006 Grand Marquis. While in park, turn on your hazard lights, press the brakes and try shifting into gear. Worked for me, but not sure if it's the same issue.
