98 ranger4 l is idleling way to fast what could be the problem

98 ford rangerv6 4litre 4x4 motor idles way too fast if i jump out and tap on
the engine it slows it down but when i go back in the truck and press on the
gas pedal it revs out to fast again

Sounds like you have a combination of problems, first clean the throttle valve and ICS passages, if that doesn’t help then you could have TPS and ISC grounding issues. As usual you should get the codes and go from there.
Why do people have twenty-five year old vehicles and have no clue ow to fix them, or have the sense to just have a mechanic find where the troubles are? Yes, it could be a vacuum line, but when you hit the engine and that works, it's likely the EGR valve is stuck and you free it. When you accelerate again, the valve just opens again and sticks. A little carburetor cleaner should fix this. A trick I learned when I was ten.
Sounds like the throttle return spring is missing or damaged. Hope that helps! Jim
