1979 beetle continuous increase in rpm while idle, help?

Asked by 79BUG Jul 18, 2020 at 07:46 PM about the 1979 Volkswagen Beetle Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello, I have a 79 beetle and just as the title says the rpms
continue to increase as soon as the car is turned on. Now it
happened thankfully while I was returning to my house
after a 20 min spin. It was running great but as soon as I hit
a slight incline on my driveway. Maybe 15° the engine
began to increase in revs even after taking my foot of the
gas. I checked the engine and the bar that moves while
pressing the gas pedal is not stuck. I'm not sure what the
issue can be. Will be getting it looked at but seeing if there
is anything I can do to hopefully negate the need for
servicing. Thanks in advance for any advice!

There is no rpm meter only the sound increasing. I have let it run for roughly 10 seconds while I pulled into my garage and it the entire time the sound grew louder and louder
