Overheating Beetle

Asked by Angela Jul 08, 2018 at 01:10 PM about the 1970 Volkswagen Beetle Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a 70 beetle almost 2 months ago. I took it
to a shop and it was running a lot smoother but on
the drive home it overheated. I do live in southern
Arizona and it was 108• today. I drove it for about
30 mins when it started to overheat. Now hours
later I tried to start it and it sounds like it wants to
but it won’t start. Any help would be great, I’m new
to the whole VW and trying to repair, restore, and
learning about these cars. Thanks

I would add a good oil cooler. Does the engine have all the original sheet metal?

Yes I believe so. The mechanic I took it to said that everything seem to be all the original parts from when it was built.

The original metal is the best cooling system. Make sure the engine is clean and that the fan belt and fan are in good shape.
