This is an issue with our 2016 Tuscon Eco also... it started with the passenger door not opening then both back doors...and now one back door will not open from the inside either. This is not an electrical issue and a repair was offered for fixing one door at 400$ or ALL doors lol at 800$... this is a SAFETY issue and we are outside of warranty BECAUSE OF MILEAGE!! 60k miles and nope corporate said sorry this is as far as we can complain. Nope... now we have set off an investigation with Vehicle Safety and the DOJ . Bad Hyundai, you surely lost a customer now and I am sure a few more when they find out that after the repair the PROBLEM WILL RETURN because you haven't fixed the issue! Repairing the hardware with the same crappy hardware will not ultimately fix the safety issue.

I had to bring my car to get fixed for this problem. They said the automatic door lock failed. They had to take the door off the hinges (it would not open) and replace the automatic door lock. Hyundai never emailed me back.

I was able to fix it myself. Front driver door wouldn’t open from outside and rear driver door wouldn’t open on inside or outside. Was able to replace front door lock actuator no problem besides figuring out door handle stuff. Rear door I had to prop open by removing plastic molding and the screw and finally sticking my hand between the plastic molding and door to release door. And finally replace lock. Each part was about $100 and I made a video for the second one to share with anybody with the problem but need to post it on YouTube. Hyundai needs to fix this themselves as this was my moms 2017 Tucson Hyundai but out of warranty.

2016 Tuscon, same issue here both back doors. This seems to be a serious widespread problem. How do we go about getting this reported for a recall?

23 people found this helpful.

Having the same issue - happened first on my front passenger, then on my rear passenger. Luckily within warranty, BUT it's a huge safety concern. With the front passenger door, I was able to open from the inside, but when It happend on my rear door, my daughter was in her car seat and I had the child lock on so it would not open from inside or outside and I was unable to get to her quickly. I've since moved her seat to the other side while I try to get it fixed (they say the part is on back order) but I don't want to engage the child lock in case it happens on that side, which is in itself a huge safety concern for me...I have reported to Hyundai and also to the NHTSA.

I went to my dealer and they had the actuators for both doors in stock. I bought them and had a friend install them for me and it solved my issue. It is a known problem, you would think they would issue a recall.

I emailed Hyundai national customer care about this on 8/22 and they have not responded. There has to be something we can do. If they aren’t going to recall it?!

I really think this needs to be a recall. The parts for the 2 door latches are on order now. The service person also agreed that this should be a recall issue. He couldn't get out of the back seat from the inside. If all 4 door latches fail (which is likely based on other vehicle experience) It would cost us $2,000 to repair all of the door latches on a 4 year old car. This is a part that should never fail. I can't imagine of I had my elderly parents with us, a child in a car seat, or someone with a physical limitation. Maybe this is something for a news investigation?

I m having the same issue with my 2016 Tucson-backdoor passenger side won t open from inside or outside or with key fob. This is serious safety issue. Hyundai should be taking care of this problem-no charge.

I am also having the same issue with my front passenger door. It's neither opening from inside or outside. Seems a long and hectic job to open the door now to check the lock issue itself. Hyundai should replace this atleast without the labor charges!!!

Ugh me too my back passenger door on 2016 Tucson won’t open from inside or outside can hear the witch moving when unlocking/locking with key fob and switch on door. this is just awful how everyone has problems but yet not a safety concern to Hyundai (which it most definitely is if you have kids and need to get out in an emergency)

I have the same problem with a 2016 model Tucson. The left rear door won’t open either from the inside or outside. We dissembled the whole door panel to find out that when we try to unlock, there is a tiny part in the lock actuator that is not fully returning to the left and hence it remains locked. Unfortunately, it seems there is no way to fix it and we need to buy the lock actuator replacement. Jose’s video is quite useful to replace the actuator.

I had the same issue with my car 2016 Hyundai Tucson in which my back driver passenger door did not open from the inside or outside. I called the warranty department and reported this safety issues and they covered the part and I had to pay for labor (ridiculous). Now a few months later the rear passenger back door has done the same thing. I really regret ever getting this car. This is unacceptable.

Strongly suggest reporting locked door issue to NHTSA, if many of us do so hyundai may be forced to cover costs as this is a Very Dangerous issue. go to web (.gov) or call 888-327-4236. Do it! BTW my 2016 Tucson has been a dog with a dangerous transmission stall that can leave you stranded in the middle of approaching traffic. Took years to get a replacement tranny and that is not an ideal piece of machinery.

Ive now filed a complaint about the door locks with NHTSA Do the same. It takes numbers to get action.

Please definitely call and report the issue. I now have my 2nx complaint with the company and I will not be paying for this safety issue. This is not normal wear and tear! Make sure you call and complain about this issue.

Everyone please file a complaint at NHTSA. Hyundai will not cover this . We had 3 doors bad and its over 1000 to fix it. Again the fix is just replacing with same bad hardware and bad engineering. Have you EVER had a car that the doors stop working? EVER? I doubt it. REPORT THIS PLEASE! And while you are at it complain about the transmission that will just stop when you press the gas, as approaching traffic is coming! Good luck! Hyundai had a good customer until we found out how they treat us on this door issue. NEVER AGAIN will I buy a Hyundai vehicle.

Great reportig to NHTSA. Also post problem on Facebook if on that. Then send email to your Congressman and two Senators noting the great Danger rather than inconvience. BTE my dealer wants $100 just to evaluate when they know it's a widespread fault.

The local Hyundai dealer service dept guy, in a very bored tone, said it would cost $100 for a "diagnosis" as if they do not know what the problem is. Repair is additional. I have reported this to the feds, NHTSA.gov. Suggest each problem car owner see if their state has a "lemon law" that goads car makers to correct widespread and serious issues. The Tuscon also had serious dangerous problems with its transmission that would leave you in neutral in the middle of an intersection. it only was after I complained to my state (Virginia consumer affairs) and to NHTSA that Hyundai agreed to replace the tranny: its a new model of the old crappy one but it is somewhat better. Ive read that In 2020 they changed the Tuscon tranny design. Thank goodness. I'm also going to complain to Consumer Reports about the doors locking BUT the usually responsible mag ignored the tranny issue, and called the Tuscon "reliable"!!!

Both my front and rear passenger side actuators failed three months apart (2016 Hyundai Tucson). The actuators are obviously faulty and a huge safety concern. Can you imagine your passengers being trapped inside your vehicle during a vehicle fire or other emergency? I reported this to the FHTSA as an electrical issue that could result in a fatality. I can't believe Hyundai hasn't issued a voluntary recall. Please submit an official complaint at the FHTSA here: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/? Also at Hyundai corporate: https://www.hyundaiusa.com/us/en/lemon-law-concerns You may think "other people are doing it so I don't have to". We need as many voices as possible letting Hyundai know THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

So the only door that currently opens on my Tuscan is my driver door. The quote to fix 3 doors that was admittedly a part failure was $1500. Thankfully, I purchased an extended bumper to bumper warranty that covers me to 120k miles and I ended up only paying $50. But even then I had to argue with them because every time I take it in they can’t ever seem to find the warranty. It has been hell with this car. The headlights turn off when I hit a bump if they are on auto, both taillights have had to be completely replaced and my driver seat magically is reclined all way when I get in in the morning. I’m trading it in very soon. Ugh I hope they recall these parts soon.

My driver door will not open from the outside unless I pull it two or three times. Opens from the inside just fine but not the outside. I have a 2016 Tucson and it's been doing this for about five months. Why is this not a recall issue? I submitted a complaint to https://www.hyundaiusa.com/us/en/lemon-law-concerns and I sent them an email with the link to this blog so they can see how many people are having the same problem.

Continue to demand that this is fixed. The warranty depth should cover for the part and they will make you pay for labor. I have been through this twice. I told them my life and my child life is in danger of we can't get out of the doors. I still have no clue how they continue to get away with this malfunction. I will never buy this brand of car again

both rear doors had to be fixed for this. Luckily i was still under warranty. Now my driver's door is starting with the same issue. Service department said it would have to be under my extended warranty but would have a deductible to be paid. Its obviously a defective part and should be corrected free of charge.

2016 Hyundai Tucson... I took my car today for the ABS SYSTEM RECALL... and I told them about my driver door and front passenger door not unlocking..paid the diagnosis fee ... ok, so this is what you need to do..*vehicle still under warranty . have the dealership call Hyundai head quarters to see if they will cover for the door locks.. be patient ... guess what verdict is they are only asking me to pay for the 100 deductible... and the parts will be in a few days.

6 people found this helpful.

My 2016 Tucson doing same thing with rear right passenger side. Won’t open from inside or outside. Just did it out of the blue today. I also got the ABS recall notice recently but called my dealership and they said they don’t have the parts yet for the 2016 recall.

570

It is insane that Hyundai after years of pretending the Tucson did not jhae severe tranny problems they now pretend the unlockable doors are not a safety issue. Is Hyundai made in North Korea? See if your state has a Lemon Law but fear warrenties passing.

I also have the same issue - The rear passenger side door won't open from inside or outside. I reported it to NHTSA. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE (TUCSON MADE between 2015 to 2016), and In Korea, HYUNDAI KOREA HAS BEEN REPAIRING THIS ISSUE FOR FREE, but HYUNDAI USA wouldn't repair it for free. THIS MUST BE ON A RECALL LIST!! Read the article below (It is in Korean so you would need google translation program to read) http://www.consumerwide.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=37459 http://www.livingeconomy.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=4704

If you are also having this problem, please contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 888-327-4236 and add your name to the growing list of people with this same issue so that it can become an official safety recall.

My 2016 Tucson all the doors are failing. Not covered under my existing warranty front side passenger door will not open from the outside back driver side door will not open at all back passenger door now will not open from outside and now the driver door is having problems. The dealer says it is not a safety problem I do not agree. This is a large and costly fix what do I do ? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Same problem....2016 Tucson with rear passenger side door locked up. It is my 87-yo father's car and I use it for is medical care and transport needs. This is a real safety issue and our dealership wants to charge us $1,000 with a "discount" of the $200 diagnostic fee applied. The part costs all of $30! I have reported it to NHTSA (1-888-327-4236) with the rest of us. Keep reporting and if you have your door repaired keep your documentation as you can get reimbursed if they ever make it a recall! This is a very real safety hazard and needs to be addressed by Hyndai

The same issue, I filed a claim on April, 27 at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 888-327-4236. They said, there is more chance to be on the recall list, if they get enough claims. Please call and report!

Same issue for me and I have filed a report w/ NHTSA. I am extremely disappointed with how Hyundai is not handling this issue after so many complaints. I am still under 60,000 miles on my 2016 but not covered by the warranty since it's 62 months old. Also, there is some type of recall on the door latch but I was told it did not cover this issue.

Hyundai is doing a "silent recall." They're not publicly issuing a recall, but they extended the warranty to 10 years / unlimited miles, and will replace it for free. If you already paid to have it replaced, they will reimburse you for the expense.

Found the same with the extended warranty that I had to ASK about. But was told they will only fix ones that are currently broken (3/4 for me). So here's to hoping the other decides to inevitably break or I get rid of this thing (that seems to have so many issues) before 2026!

I am having the same problem with my 2016 Hyundai Tucson. First it was the passenger door, then it was the rear passenger. I had both of these fixed in Feb 2021 and within 2 weeks the rear driver side door did the same thing. I have been trying to figure out how to get reimbursed for the 2 I fixed, but unable to find anything on their website about reimbursal.

There is a TSB that has been issued 21-BD-006H. Trying to get it honoured in Canada right now. Dealer said they were unaware but is looking into it and bringing the car in for an inspection. This is a link to the TSB on the NHSTA site https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10196574-0001.pdf

I’m having same issue. Started with left rear door and now none of the doors open except the drivers door. Occasionally if I click fob over and over it will unlock one, but rare. They are handling this as an extended warranty issue because they know the problem exists. My parts to fix are on back order and they have no idea when they will be in citing supply chain issues. I told them I’m not willing to drive a car I cannot get my grandkids out of or a rescuer couldn’t get passengers out of and demanded they provide a rental until such time as they can fix the problem. They told me it would take about 5 days just to track down a rental. It’s completely unacceptable that this isn’t a urgent recall.

Why are there no recalls for this. I looked again today. In order to get attention to this recall submit the info to NHTSA. Report it to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at Safercar.gov as this is a HUGE safety issue and now I'm on my second repair for a different door (2016 Tucson). First time it happened the car was 50k miles. Second time happening now, and it's really a pain in the a**. I can't wait to get rid of this POS car for good after it's fixed. Again. How many kids or adults need to be locked in during an emergency?

Thanks to all above for all your complaining to Hyundai. I just had my 2016 Eco repaired no charge. Told service advisor of TSB 21-bd-006H extending warranty to 10 years for this problem. No manufacturer wants to do recalls . They all want to hide the repair in TSB's.

Any luck getting this covered in Canada? I called my dealership and they said the TSBs are only applicable in USA. Going to call both Hyundai Canada and Transport Canada if I can't get the dealership to budge.

10

Just responding to my answer above - I called Hyundai Canada (1-866-620-7521), got to their warranty service and gave the gentleman my VIN. He looked up my car and said it does qualify for the extended warranty latch replacement. He will be calling the dealership to get everything sorted. So if you are in Canada just call the number above and they will help you out.

i am in the UK and facing the same issue with a 2015 Tuscon - i have contacted HYUNDAI UK and they say they are a separate company to the US and that the issue is linked to the US - i have sent them a copy of the extended 10yr warranty for US & the article from Korea that someone on here posted but they are still denying all responsibility. I am trying to find the ink on the NHTSA to show all the reports that have been made but im nothaving much luck - can anyone help with the link please or any further info that you may have - many many thanks

What a disaster. I took the car into a Hyundai dealer 4 weeks ago after learning they would cover it if it inspected to be a door latch. It was a $150 refundable inspection fee to confirm this was the cause. It was. They ordered the parts. Then 2 weeks later got a call to bring in the car. Now 2 weeks later the car is still there bc they found a broken rod too and now have to wait on the part. Totally unacceptable both the dealership and Hyundai not stocking parts to fix it when this is the second time this has happened in two years. And to a million other cars. My car has been in the shop for half it's life with transmission issues. A new transmission and the Hyundai corp issued me a $5k check in "good faith". No thanks. I'm going to run this POS into the ground as it now has 125k miles. DO NOT BUY HYUNDAI or Genesis. WHAT A DISASTER of a company.

Same here with 2016 Tuscon. My doors and windows started to fail (Front passenger, Rear passenger few months later and now the driver side door) right after my 5 years Hyundai warranty expired as if these parts are designed to fail right about time when the manufacturer warranty expires and rip off customers. I deeply regret buying this fancy peice of crap at that time, Never ever buying Hyundai cars in my life and I won't recommend to my friends/family either.

I have the same issue and made a complaint about this to Transport Canada. I have received a response that the warranty for this issue has been extended to 10Yrs, Unlimited mileage. If you take it to the dealership and quote Service Bulletin 22-C0487, you will get it repaired under warranty.

4 people found this helpful.

I have the same issue as everyone else on a 2018 Hyundai Kona on the right front passenger door. I paid a $182.00 "diagnostic" fee, and then was told that it will be $453.00 parts and labor to replace the latch. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA per the advice in this thread.

I just called to transport Canada and Hyundai Canada. Not for all Hyundai Elantra 2017 the warranty extended. I was told they have a list with Vin numbers. So if your car on that list you are lucky...if not you need to pay out of your pocket

10

Mila, do you mind sharing what numbers you used to contact Transport Canada and Hyundai Canada? I have this issue, but won't be getting it fixed if not covered under warranty. Ideally would like to know if it's covered before taking it in.

1 people found this helpful.

22-C0487 for Canada but not all cars warranty extended, they need to check your vin. My 2017 Elantra not included so I need to fix it by myself. And TSB 21-BD-006H for USA works for all cars you can find it online but Hyundai Canada doesn't accept it :(

GuruDDK1WH38, let me know if you find something, I recommend you to call to Hyundai Canada and check you vin number. I hope it will be on the list.

GuruDDK1WH38, if your vin is not on Hyundai Canada list, you have to call Transport Canada and explain the issue. I just spoke with them they keep my vin and will try to help. No guarantee but if more people call them more chances to get it approved like in USA warranty for all cars not only for certain vins.
