Check the engine oil level.

It was just changed prior to my buying it a few weeks ago. 100% oil life.

A knock is not a good sign of anything. Is it coming from down in the engine?

Yeah sounds like maybe left side (facing it). They started with the belt but said next step may be something in air compressor? They don't really know what it could be.
