my 1998 gmc jimmy starts out running horribly rough: chokes but never stalls. later it real run great with very little misfiring. distributor, cap, plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel pressure, starter for start have all been replaced or ruled out.

Very similar to the problem I had....Try using an AC Delco brand distributor cap. Took me months to figure it out, after replacing the cap several times with different brands. The other brands worked great for a day or two, then crapped out. This info was VERY hard to find, but I read that aftermarkets FOR THIS VEHICLE seem to have a design flaw where they will short out quickly, or come out of the box with hairline cracks allowing moisture in.
