2002 Mustang GT 4.6 2v ticking

Asked by cwalling0519 Nov 26, 2018 at 05:41 PM about the 2002 Ford Mustang GT Premium

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Mustang GT 4.6L 2v. It had a very loud ticking in the front so i
removed the front cover and found 2 broken chain guides. I ordered a whole
new timing set from for performance, chains, all guides, both tensioners, new
cam and crank gears, and all new hardware. I installed it all to spec and set
timing correctly. It now runs great but still has a tick at all times that changes
with RPM hot or cold.

Could it be a collapsed lifter? Did you try to run it with the alternator belt off?

I have not tried with the belt off. I don’t know much about this engine, being overhead cam I wouldn’t think it would have lifters, I would think it should have followers and maybe hydraulic lash adjusters. I plan on taking the covers back off this week and checking the valve train.
