When filling with fuel, you have to find the right spot for the nozzle to be able to fill full blast. Also you cannot be topping off the gas tank, that first click on the nozzle is it when the gas tank is accepting the fuel properly. So what may have happen if you overfilled the tank is that the EVAP canister filter may have gotten saturated with gas, not allowing the fumes to escape properly. Either struggle with it for a while until the filter clears or replace the EVAP canister.
