Approximately how often should brake pads and rotors be changed?

That depends on how much you drive, mostly city or highway driving, what type of driver you are, do you anticipate your stops opposed to braking at the last second. In the newer vehicles with the automatic transmissions giving the option to downshift before coming to a stop, in my opinion a huge benefit for extending the life of brakes & rotors. You're asking under normal conditions how often on average do brakes & rotors last, again there's no average answer, let's say anywhere from 5000 miles to 200,000 miles.
