Transmission won't engage park, rev or drive gears

Asked by Jan 23, 2017 at 05:45 PM about the 1986 Chevrolet El Camino Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Stock transmission....Rebuilt 350(unsure of year)
Just acquired 86 El Camino.  Just started engine after PO
Added 350 to stock transmission....Rolls in all gear selections from park to low.
Linkage is connected and engaging gear selector on tranny
correctly....Unhooked linkage and manually changed gear selector.  No joy...
Not sure where to begin.....Fluid level correct...Noticed a new torque converter
has been installed.

Someone messed up on the rebuild.

Yes perhaps...But to my knowledge transmission wasn't rebuilt and is original...Only engine was replaced.....But then again my knowledge of that is limited...

You could drop the tranny pan just too see if everything is connected up inside, but that can be really messy if you have to drop the valve body. If your knowledge is limited then a tranny shop is your best bet.
