when the timing belt breaks does hurt the whole motor or just the heads

well i would get the heads pulled off and go from there you cant ever really tell what all broke until your accually in the engine.

that engine should be an interference fit most DOHC engines are

The 6G72 motors are interference. You will need to pull the heads, and have a machine shop install new valves. Please do yourself a favor and replace the ALL the timing pulley's, water pump, and tensioner when you are replacing the belt. I would personally only recommend using OEM gaskets.
